If you are looking to add muscle mass to your frame most of us know that we have to hit the weights hard in order kick start our bodies into making the changes that will stimulate our muscle fibers to grow bigger in response to the challenges thrown their way. You may be tempted to think that is all it takes to add muscle to your body as you feel your biceps pump after completing an intense set of curls, but it is most definitely not. The amount of swelling or local bleeding into the muscle (from torn blood vessels) can best be managed early by applying ice packs and maintaining the strained muscle in a stretched position. Heat can be applied when the swelling has lessened. However, the early application of heat can increase swelling and pain. Remember, ice or heat should not be applied to bare skin. Always use a protective covering such as a towel between the ice or heat and the skin as it may burn the skin otherwise.
While training is of course essential if you want to bulk up and build muscle it is important that we do not forget just how important good nutrition is in the mass-building equation. Make no mistake, eating for muscle is just as important as lifting for muscle and your diet is the key to your success. The foods we consume in the morning on the way to work, the meals or snacks we prepare for lunch, what you put into your body immediately following your workout, and your final meal of the day all impact your results as much as, if not more than the number of reps you squeeze out at the end of a set.
To build muscle you need between 0.64 and 0.82 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day.
